Retford rugby club hosted Matlock Rugby club

They arrived full of gusto and self-belief on a Bright sunny day with a light breeze, great for free-flowing rugby. The Game kicked off with a large and vocal audience with a good turnout of Retford supporters.
Matlock came hard for the first 10 minutes with a very large pack with strong runners at 6 and 8
After the initial shock of the intensity that comes from playing a team 2 leagues higher Retford settled down into there processes that are very quickly becoming second nature to them.
The defence at times from Retford this season has been nothing short of bone crunching and it was Mattock’s turn to feel the force this week,
On the back of one of these hits Keelan Ward was off down the field after he had made the initial bone cruncher to score under the posts
Both teams traded blows in a very fast and fluid game that for a change the referee allowed to flow after a sustained amount of pressure Matlock went over from close range.
Just before half time The ball emerged from the scrum and was quickly fired into the hands of Dan Lodge at 12 for Retford who skipped his way past 1 player and just basically ran over 3 more to score again under the posts,
A third try was scored by Retford’s player coach using all his experience to position himself against the smallest player on the field, from 5 metres out there would be only 1 winner.
The second half traded blows over and over with Retford needing to work on giving soft scores and knowing where they should play on the pitch.
With 5 minutes to go Matlock stole the lead to put the scores at 25-23 from a close range drive,
For the last 4 minutes the ball never left the Matlock 22 yard line but the final score wasn’t to be in hindsight the points on offer from penalties should have been taken,
Head Coach Garry Woodcock congratulated his players on probably the best game of rugby the Ordsall ground has seen in the last 10yrs and challenged his squad to reach these standards every time they step on the field. Next week the 1st are away to Skegness RUFC and the 2nd travel to Amber Valley Rugby Club RUFC , both games kick off at 3.00pm.
